Working in healthcare can often feel like you're in a convention filled with Sheldon Coopers (any Big Bang Theory fans out there?)—where everyone seems brilliant, and you’re just trying to keep up. With incredible doctors, PAs, and residents who might be further along in their careers, it’s no wonder the healthcare field can feel overwhelming.
However, it’s important to remember that you wouldn’t have your job if you weren’t qualified. You are just as capable and intelligent as everyone else in your field. Imposter syndrome is more common than you might think, especially in challenging work environments like healthcare. So if you’ve ever doubted yourself or felt like you don’t belong, know you’re not alone. Here are some ways to help you overcome imposter syndrome and thrive in your career:
1. Self-Reflection
Take time to reflect on what’s making you feel “less than.” How does imposter syndrome show up for you? Do you go quiet, feel upset, or decide not to speak up again? Understanding your reactions can help you address these feelings and regain your confidence.
2. Cognitive Restructuring
Reframe the way you talk to yourself. If you find yourself thinking, “I’ll never be as smart as them,” “I always make mistakes,” or “They’re always better than me at x, y, z,” stop! These thoughts are not helpful. Challenge negative beliefs by considering your accomplishments and creating positive affirmations.
3. Understand Your Triggers
Identify the situations that trigger imposter syndrome. Is it certain tasks, feedback, or interactions with specific colleagues that spark these feelings? Understanding the root causes of your self-doubt can help you address them more effectively. Whether it’s a particular topic or decision, knowing your triggers will empower you to manage your emotions.
4. Seek Support
It’s tough to tackle negative thoughts and self-doubt alone. Talking to someone you trust can make a world of difference. For people of color, imposter syndrome may stem from deeper issues related to systemic challenges and biases in healthcare. Get connected to someone who understands your perspective and offers a safe space to share your feelings.
Healthcare is a demanding and competitive profession, and imposter syndrome thrives in high-pressure environments. Remind yourself that every challenge you overcome at work is not only proof that you are good at your job but that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. Celebrate your achievements, trust your abilities, and keep building your confidence.
